Temperatures rose well above 30 C in many parts of Japan the same day. The mercury topped 30C for a fourth straight day in central Tokyo, a new record for May, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. A woman in her 90s was also found dead in a field in Oshu, Iwate Prefecture, with local authorities suspecting heatstroke. In Machida, western Tokyo, 24 junior high school students complained of feeling ill while practising for sports day. The heat is expected to gradually ease in western Japan on Tuesday with the arrival of a moist air mass, it added.
